Attachment-based Counselling (ABC) Level 2: Working with Depression
When clients come to counselling, many struggle with frustration which may manifest as depression. If their life was working for them, there would be no need to seek help. In this seminar you will be introduced to a reconceptualization of Dollard and Millar’s (1945) Frustration-Aggression hypothesis for depression, integrating Neufeld’s attachment-based developmental paradigm to offer 3 intervention points for our clients struggling with depression. The processes of registering futility, adaptation and integration are crucial for clients to avoid falling into a depressive state.
We will look at how our clients may struggle with the process of adaptation and so, by default, their frustration may be expressed as aggression (whether that be directed at the self – bullying self-talk, self-injurious behavior, self-blame/helplessness/powerlessness, or directed at the other- attacking verbally, physically, emotional abuse and impotent rage). In this context we will explore the gift of tears of futility leading to adaption, and the gift of mixed emotions (which involves the integrative function of the pre-frontal cortex) and being at psychological rest for the neo-cortex and executive functioning to come ‘back on line’.
Neufeld’s 5-step model of working with emotions to process frustration healthily, will be presented so counsellors can help their clients embrace their vulnerability and develop adaptive functioning in their prefrontal cortex.
This seminar is the second of a 3 part series, which systematically outlines the principles of the Attachment-based Developmental Paradigm (Neufeld) which I have adapted into Attachment-based Counselling model, applying the key principles to therapy (mainly with adults but it has huge application to working with children). So in order for you to gain the most out of this training it is best that you watch the series from the introduction ABC 1-2 and then finish with 3 (working with anxiety/alarm).
