July 2024 Newsletter – Happy Matariki/Maori New Year

Kia ora Friends and Colleagues,

The winter solstice is a special time of year in Aotearoa as we come together to celebrate Matariki Māori New Year. In the night sky the Seven Stars of Matariki (Pleiades) reappear signalling a time for reflection, renewal, and new beginnings. May you experience renewed hope and peace in your work as you reflect on the past year, celebrate the present, and plan for the year ahead. To help you plan ahead and create space for reflection and reinvigoration in your work, read on to learn about the many offerings coming up over the next few months.

As part of running the One Wild and Precious Life course and retreats (https://ruthmcconnell.com/product/one-wild-and-precious-life-12-week-online-course/) I need to ‘practice what I preach’. So I try to regularly have an Artist Date with my inner artist child. Here is a painting of Matariki stars, which I did at a recent Paint and Sip event with my youngest daughter. The most important thing about true play is that it is activated rest with no outcomes attached (Dr Gordon Neufeld, 2023) which is why it’s ok to look so amateurish, as it’s the joy of the process that counts.

Deadlines coming up soon:

If you need any persuasion, here is a very encouraging endorsement from a recent participant of my last presentation:

I recently attended one of Ruth’s workshops and highly recommend her training. Ruth has a wealth of in-depth knowledge to share. Her workshop covered a wide range of topics related to the impact of attachment on the development of human beings, the power of therapeutic attachment, and how to best support clients in healing from their trauma and moving through the process of maturation to become whole, integrated people.  She presents in a way that is engaging and informative, without being so dense that it is overwhelming.

Retreats

If you can’t commit to the One Wild and Precious Life 12 week online course, then you might find that a weekend retreat is just right for you.

The theme of the retreat is Rest Play Grow. In our busy lives we are in great need of rest and play for resilience. As a continuation of the themes explored in the One Wild and Precious Life course, the retreat content for reflection and growth includes:

  1. Rest in Right Relationships: Recovering a sense of Connection (reflections on attachment theory for richer relationships).
  2. Play as activated rest: the neuroscience behind play and creativity. Introducing Neurographic exercises and other creative outlets for your own self-care and in your counselling/clinical practice.
  3. Circle of Trust: engaging in a Courage and Renewal exercise with a poem and a creative exercise to reflect on our lives and emerging areas of growth.
  4. Interconnectedness and Awe: the new science of awe and the healing benefits of nature.

During the retreat there will be ‘free time’ for creativity and a chance to ‘play’ together (watching classic movies, playing board games, dancing or any other ‘silliness’ that recalibrates our nervous systems with FUN).
